US Startup Challenges Japan to Giant Robot Battle

US Startup Challenges Japan to Giant Robot Battle

Science and Innovation, Technology
They've been popularized in movies, television and video games, but giant fighting robots still haven't left the realm of science fiction. That will soon change. Megabots Inc., an Oakland, California-based startup, has built a 15-foot mechanical gladiator called the Mark II and challenged a Japanese firm to an international battle for robot supremacy. Tokyo-based Suidobashi Heavy Industries, maker of the 13-foot Kuratas, accepted the challenge, setting the stage for the first giant robot battle of its kind next year. The exact date and location are yet to be determined. Win or lose, it's all part of Megabots' plan by to make gladiator-style robot combat into big-time entertainment - a mix between Ultimate Fighting Championship and Formula One auto racing - while developing new industrial ...

Astronomers Measure Wind Speeds of 8,690Kmph on Exoplanet

Science and Innovation, Technology
An exoplanet located about 63 light-years away has winds reaching a staggering 8,690kmph, around 20 times faster than ever recorded on Earth, according to the first ever weather map of a planet outside our solar system. The finding by researchers at University of Warwick in the UK is the first time that a weather system on a planet outside of Earth's solar system has been directly measured and mapped. The wind speed recorded is 20 times greater than the fastest ever known on Earth, where it would be seven times the speed of sound, researchers said. "This is the first ever weather map from outside of our solar system. Whilst we have previously known of wind on exoplanets, we have never before been able to directly measure and map a weather system," said lead researcher Tom Louden, of the U...

World’s First ‘Porous’ Liquid Can Filter Carbon Emissions

Science and Innovation, Technology
In a breakthrough, scientists have developed the world's first 'porous' liquid that can potentially be used to capture harmful carbon emissions to prevent them from entering the Earth's atmosphere. Researchers at Queen's University Belfast in UK, along with colleagues at the University of Liverpool and other, international partners, invented the new liquid and found that it can dissolve unusually large amount of gas, which are absorbed into the 'holes' in the liquid. The research could pave the way for many more efficient and greener chemical processes, including the procedure known as carbon capture - trapping carbon dioxide from major sources, for example a fossil-fuel power plant, and storing it to prevent its entry into the atmosphere. "Materials which contain permanent holes, or pore...
Drug That Could Limit Spread of Deadly Brain Tumours

Drug That Could Limit Spread of Deadly Brain Tumours

Science and Innovation, Technology
Researchers have identified a drug that works to limit the spread of glioblastoma -- the most common primary tumour of the brain and central nervous system which is also regarded as one of the most aggressive of all cancers. The drug propentofylline or PPF, targets a protein called TROY. It also increases the effectiveness of a standard-of-care chemotherapy drug called temozolomide (TMZ), and radiation, to treat glioblastoma. "We showed that PPF decreased glioblastoma cell expression of TROY, inhibited glioma cell invasion, and made brain cancer cells more vulnerable to TMZ and radiation," said the study's senior author Nhan Tran from Translational Genomics Research Institute (Tgen) in Phoenix, US. "Our data suggests that PPF, working in combination with TMZ and radiation, could limit gli...

Hoping to Find Life on Other Planets, Astronomers Start on Giant Chile Telescope

Science and Innovation, Technology
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet put hammer to stone on an Andean mountaintop on Wednesday evening to mark the start of construction for one of the world's most advanced telescopes, an instrument that may help shed light on the possibility of life on distant planets. The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), scheduled to be completed by 2024, will have a resolution 10 times that of the Hubble spacecraft. Experts say it will be able to observe black holes in the distant cosmos and make out planets in other solar systems with unprecedented detail. Such technology, astronomers say, will help humans determine how the universe formed and if planets hundreds of light years away could support life. "With this science, there are no limits to the possibilities that are open," said Bachelet, stand...

‘Superduck’ Dinosaur Provides Insight Into Elaborate Head Crests

Science and Innovation, Technology
In a warm, lush environment near a meandering river 79.5 million years ago in Montana, a dinosaur nicknamed "Superduck" munched on leaves and kept a lookout for predators related to Tyrannosaurus rex that might threaten its herd. Scientists on Wednesday announced the discovery of fossils of the dinosaur they named Probrachylophosaurus bergei that was about 30 feet (9 metres) long, weighed more than 5 tons and donned a small, triangular bony crest atop its skull. It was a member of a plant-eating group called duck-billed dinosaurs, known for beaks resembling a duck's bill, common during the latter part of the Cretaceous Period. Many duck-billed dinosaurs boasted head crests of various shapes and sizes. Probrachylophosaurus, one of the earliest with a prominent crest, offers insight into ...

The Lenovo P2, a massive battery smartphone that was unveiled at IFA 2016, is all set to launch next month. While the company had detailed most specifications at the trade show last month, the complete specifications have now been leaked. Alongside, the retail packaging of the frequently-leaked Moto M (seen above), which was last seen in live images, has allegedly been spotted. Update: A previous version of the story incorrectly associated the leaked specifications to the Moto M, when in fact they are for the Lenovo P2, which was unveiled at IFA 2016 earlier this year. As per a new leaked image of specifications, shared by Krispitech, the Lenovo P2 will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box. It is also said to be powered by a 2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, coupled with eithe...
