When you pick up your favorite beverage, the label is probably the last thing on your mind. However, if there were no labels, you would not be able to identify your beverage from the thousands of others. Writing on the bottles would serve a purpose, but this method would likely be only a temporary solution.

The First Wine Labels

It is thought that the first wine labels were invented in 1798. Although crude compared to today’s labels, they did serve a purpose. They were printed using lithography and were rectangular in shape. These labels were also used on crates that held items such as boxes containing cigars, canned vegetables, and fruit. Colorful labels were preferable because they helped to catch the eye of the buyer.

Some labels were made prior to this time, but they were hand written, and string was used to attach them to bottles. Many of the early labels are very desirable to collectors. Before there were restrictions put on what the labels on wine bottles must contain, some displayed a variety of decorations. Labels in Italy often had the coat of arms of the family that made the wine or landscapes of the countryside.

Self-Adhesive Labels

Before the invention of self-adhesive labels by R. Stanton Avery in the 1930s, many were attached to products using a paste made from various materials. The self-adhesive labels had a surface made of paper with adhesive that attached to a liner with a coating of silicone. This type was and still is referred to as pressure sensitive labels.

Reasons for Labeling

Today there are labeling regulations for beverages. Wine must be labeled with the bottler’s name and address. They also require the country where the wine originated to be on the label. The percentage of alcohol contained in the wine is another requirement. Depending on the country, warnings are required. For example, in the US labels on alcoholic beverages must include warnings about the risk of consuming alcohol while pregnant.

One of the main things labels do is attract the buyer. When an attractive or interesting label is used, it is more noticeable. Catching the attention of the potential buyer is the first step to getting them interested in buying the product. One example of a company offering a variety of labels is Bottle Labelers available at Bottle-Labeler.com.

Without a doubt, labels are a necessity as they provide the consumer with important information. In addition, they can make an impression about your company or product.
